Illustrator-Elaine Rabon- visits Laurens County Library

On March 29th the Laurens County Library will present Elaine Hearn Rabon a children's picture book illustrator from Athens, Georgia. She will talk about her art and what inspired her to become interested in the art form of children's picture books. This program is part of the S.M.A.R.T. family programming for the enjoyment of families with children ages 2-12. Mrs. Rabon will talk about Tim and Sally the main characters of her books. They are a brother and sister team who enjoy everyday life. This program will be held on a Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. This is an opportunity to have fun and learn as a family. Join us at the Laurens County Library meeting room to welcome Elaine Hearn Rabon. Family members are encouraged to ask questions that relate to art, drawing and book publishing. Two of the books illustrated by Mrs. Rabon are available for check out at the Laurens and Clinton libraries. The two titles are Tim and Sally's Year in Poems and Tim and Sally's Beach Adventure. Dead End in Norvelt - Newbery Winner

The Newbery winner has just been anounced on January 23, 2012 at 7:45 a.m. The winner is Dead End in Norvelt. This book by author Jack Gantos will delight and amuse you. Boys will love how Jack Gantos the main character gets into trouble just being a boy. He fires a rifle he was told not to touch and causes a nose bleed that scares his mother half to death. The blood on his shirt is not from being shot by the rifle he fired. He's prone to nose bleeds at the slightest excitement. He's grounded for life but that doesn't stop him from reading or having adventures that have tons of action. Look out for nose bleeds of extreme description. Have fun reading this Newbery award winning book! It will make you laugh out loud and hopefully you won't get a nose bleed reading it. The Newbery honor books are Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai and Breaking Stalin's Nose by Eugene Yelchin. These two books are on order and will be available soon. Waiting for the Magic by Patricia MacLachlan

Patricia MacLachlan wrote Sarah Plain and Tall. Now she has a new book called Waiting for the Magic. This book would be fun to read during the holiday break. The story begins with a mom, dad and two children. Dad leaves for awhile and mom makes a big decision. She has always wanted a dog. So she and the kids go to the animal shelter to adopt a dog. Mom makes another big decision to adopt four dogs and a cat. Read this book to see how this family finds magic in togetherness. Have a Happy Holiday while reading a good book!

While the kids are out of school, plan on a special time during the evening to read some old favorites and some new stories too. Playaway..Spring Break

Spring Break has finally begun for School District 55 & 56 students. The weather is sunny and you want to get outside. But tonight when you finish eating dinner, you might like to sit and listen to a book. The library has books to listen to in an all-in-one audiobook called a PLAYAWAY. I'm not shouting at you. PLAYAWAY is a brand name for an audio book about the size of a cell phone. You will need to have your own earbuds to listen to these exciting stories. Here are some titles from the children's department. We have Waiting For Normal by Leslie Connor and Swindle by Gordon Korman. We also have The 39 Clues series read by David Pittu. Diary of a Wimpy Kid Fans

Hi Kids, If you like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney, I think you'll like other titles written in this diary style. Some picture books to try are Diary of a Fly and Diary of a Spider by Doreen Cronin. Also try Dear Annie by Judith Caseley. In the chapter book section or juvenile fiction section as we call it here at the public library read the Amelia series by Marissa Moss. Rose's Journal is also written by Marissa Moss. The Laurens County Library System has a new series of biographies called "Who Was?". We have Who Was Mark Twain?, Who was Elvis Presley? and Who Was Albert Einstein? We have over twenty titles.
